Kilimanjaro Climbing – Rongai Route (6–7 Days)

The Northern, Quiet & Scenic Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is a quieter and less crowded path, offering a more remote trekking experience compared to other routes.

With its gradual ascent profile and gentle gradients, the Rongai Route is ideal for climbers who prefer a steady pace, better acclimatization, and higher chances of summit success.

This route provides unique perspectives of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, along with opportunities to spot wildlife in the lower forest zones.

Day By Day Itinerary

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with an early morning transfer from Arusha to Rongai Gate, located on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border.

Upon arrival, you will complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. A full briefing will be provided covering safety procedures, trekking pace, and expectations for the journey ahead.

The trek begins through forested slopes before gradually opening into moorland terrain.

Trek Details:

  • Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Time: 4–5 hours
    Elevation Gain: ~1,000 m
  • Overnight: Simba Camp (~2,700 m / 8,860 ft)
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, you continue your ascent along the quieter northern slopes.

The landscape transitions from forest into heath and moorland, featuring giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsels.

Your guides maintain a slow “pole pole” pace to support acclimatization.

You will enjoy stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks throughout the day.

Upon arrival at Kikelewa Camp, relax, hydrate, and enjoy a warm meal prepared by your crew.

Trek Details:

  • Distance: ~12 km (7.5 miles)
  • Time: 5–6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: ~800 m
  • Overnight: Kikelewa Camp (~3,300 m / 10,827 ft)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The trail becomes steeper as you enter alpine desert terrain.

The scenery becomes more rugged with rocky landscapes and panoramic views.

Mawenzi Peak rises dramatically nearby, while Kibo appears closer.

After trekking, you arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath towering cliffs — one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.

Optional acclimatization walk in the afternoon.

Trek Details:

  • Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Time: 5–6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: ~600 m
  • Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (~3,900 m / 12,795 ft)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This day is dedicated to acclimatization. You will take a short hike to higher elevations and return to camp (“climb high, sleep low”). The hike offers incredible views of Mawenzi’s jagged peaks and Kibo summit. Afternoon is for rest, hydration, and preparation for summit stages.

  • Trek Details:
    Distance: ~4–6 km
    Time: 2–4 hours
    Elevation Gain: ~200–300 m
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (~3,900 m)
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today you cross the vast alpine desert known as “The Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain is open, dry, and lunar-like. The trail is long but gradual, requiring steady pacing. Arrive at Kibo Hut, where you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Early dinner and detailed briefing before resting.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. Climb slowly through steep scree to Gillman’s Point, reaching sunrise over the African plains. Continue along the crater rim past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m) — the highest point in Africa. After celebration, descend to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue to Horombo Hut.
