Welcome to Tanzania and the beginning of your unforgettable journey.
- Meal plan: Bed & Breakfast
Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha followed by a scenic drive to Machame Gate. After completing registration and meeting your mountain crew, your trek begins through the lush rainforest zone.
The trail winds through towering trees, hanging moss, and dense vegetation. The forest is rich with birdlife and monkeys, and the steady uphill walk allows you to gradually adjust to the altitude. The air is fresh, and the excitement of the climb builds with every step.
After 6–7 hours of trekking, you arrive at Machame Camp, located above the forest line where the trees begin to thin and the mountain views open up.
Trek Details:
- Distance: ~11 km (6.8 miles)
- Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
- Elevation Gain: ~1,280 m
- Overnight: Machame Camp (3,000 m / 9,840 ft)
Meal Plan: Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant heathers and open landscapes replacing dense forest.
The trail follows a scenic ridge with spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys. As you gain elevation, the scenery becomes more expansive and dramatic.
Today’s gradual climb helps your body continue adapting to the altitude. You arrive at Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful high-altitude plateaus in Africa.
Trek Details:
- Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
- Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
- Elevation Gain: ~800 m
- Overnight: Shira Camp (3,800 m / 12,467 ft)
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This is a crucial acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.
You trek steadily upward toward Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, where you will have lunch and allow your body to adjust to the higher altitude. After spending time at Lava Tower, you descend to Barranco Camp.
The descent helps improve acclimatization and increases summit success rates. Barranco Camp is located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, with breathtaking views of glaciers and dramatic rock formations.
Trek Details:
- Distance: ~12 km (7.5 miles)
- Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
- Elevation Gain: ~800 m
- Elevation Loss: ~650 m
- Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,950 m / 12,959 ft)
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you climb the famous Barranco Wall — a highlight of the trek. Despite its steep appearance, it is safe and manageable, and reaching the top rewards you with incredible panoramic views.
You then descend into Karanga Valley and continue ascending towards Barafu Camp. Due to the 6-day schedule, this day is longer and more demanding, but crucial for positioning yourself for the summit attempt.
At Barafu Camp, the environment is alpine and rocky, with stunning views of the summit. You will:
- Have an early dinner
- Receive a detailed summit briefing
- Rest before your midnight climb
Distance: ~10 km
Time: 7–8 hours
Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,600 m)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your journey.
You begin your summit attempt around midnight, hiking slowly in the dark with headlamps. The climb is steep and physically demanding, but your guides will support and motivate you every step of the way.
Reaching Stella Point at sunrise is an unforgettable moment. From there, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m) — the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro.
After celebrating and taking photos, you descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.
Distance: ~17 km
Time: 10–14 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,100 m)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you begin your final descent from Mweka Camp, walking through the lush and vibrant rainforest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro.
This part of the trail is gentle and refreshing, offering a completely different atmosphere compared to the higher alpine zones you have just conquered.
As you descend, you will be surrounded by:
- Towering trees and thick green vegetation
- The sounds of birds and forest wildlife
- Fresh, oxygen-rich air that brings a sense of relief and comfort
This peaceful walk allows you to reflect on your incredible journey — from rainforest to summit and back.
Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will complete park formalities and receive your official summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to Arusha for a hot shower, relaxation, and celebration.
