The Tarangire River, which winds through the park, serves as the primary source of water for wildlife during the dry season, attracting a high concentration of animals. The crater is home to approximately 30,000 large mammals that reside here year-round, including buffaloes, lions, elephants, cheetahs, and the endangered black rhinoceros. The crater also hosts a wide variety of birdlife, including flamingos, eagles, and buzzards, particularly around the soda lake at the crater floor.
