Day By Day Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our professional team and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. You will have time to relax, check your gear, and prepare for the climb. A detailed pre-trek briefing will be conducted to ensure you are fully ready for the adventure.
- Accommodation: Greenside Hotel
- Meals: Bed & Breakfast
Your journey begins with a scenic morning drive from Arusha to Lemosho Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, you will complete park registration while your guides and porters prepare equipment and supplies. After a briefing, your trek begins through a dense and untouched rainforest. The trail is shaded by towering trees, with thick vegetation, ferns, and vines creating a lush environment. Wildlife is common here, including monkeys and a variety of bird species. The air is humid and rich in oxygen, making this a comfortable introduction to the climb. Walking at a steady and controlled pace allows your body to begin adapting gradually to the altitude. By afternoon, you arrive at Lemosho Forest Camp, where your tents will be set up beneath the forest canopy. You will be welcomed with hot drinks and a freshly prepared meal.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
Time: 4–6 hours
Elevation Gain: ~1,200 m
Overnight: Lemosho Forest Camp (~2,600 m / 8,530 ft)
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you continue your ascent through the upper rainforest as the environment gradually transitions into heath and moorland. The vegetation becomes less dense, and the landscape begins to open up, offering wide views of valleys and distant hills. Giant heathers and unique high-altitude plants begin to dominate the scenery. As you gain elevation, the air becomes cooler and thinner, and your guides will maintain a slow “pole pole” pace to ensure proper acclimatization. You arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau—one of the most impressive geological features on Mount Kilimanjaro. The open landscape provides panoramic views and a true sense of the mountain’s scale.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~8 km (5 miles)
Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: ~1,100 m
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp (~3,500 m / 11,480 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today is a relatively gentle trekking day designed specifically for acclimatization. You will traverse across the vast Shira Plateau, a high-altitude desert landscape with incredible open views of Kibo Peak and surrounding valleys. The terrain is mostly gradual, allowing your body to adjust comfortably to the increasing altitude. During the hike, you may take short acclimatization walks to slightly higher elevations before returning to the main trail. Arriving early at Shira 2 Camp gives you time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy spectacular sunset views over the plateau.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~5 km (3 miles)
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: ~200 m
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp (~3,800 m / 12,470 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This is one of the most important days for acclimatization on the Lemosho Route. After breakfast, you begin a steady ascent toward Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of approximately 4,600 meters. This climb allows your body to experience higher elevation, which is essential for adaptation. The landscape becomes more dramatic, with volcanic rock formations and alpine desert terrain. After spending time at Lava Tower for lunch and acclimatization, you descend to Barranco Camp. This descent is crucial as it follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, significantly improving your chances of summit success. Barranco Camp is located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, surrounded by towering cliffs and glaciers.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~12 km (7.5 miles)
Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation Gain: ~800 m
Elevation Loss: ~650 m
Overnight: Barranco Camp (~3,950 m / 12,959 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. Although it appears steep and intimidating at first, it is a manageable scramble and one of the most exciting highlights of the trek. Reaching the top rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of valleys, glaciers, and surrounding peaks. From the top, the trail descends into Karanga Valley before gradually ascending again to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter trekking day, intentionally designed to allow additional acclimatization and recovery before moving higher. Upon arrival, you can relax, hydrate, and enjoy the peaceful alpine environment.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~5 km (3 miles)
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: ~150 m
Overnight: Karanga Camp (~4,100 m / 13,451 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today you ascend steadily over rocky alpine terrain toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic, with expansive views of the mountain and surrounding valleys. As you approach Barafu Camp, the summit of Kilimanjaro feels close and within reach. Upon arrival, you will rest, hydrate, and prepare carefully for the summit push. An early dinner is served, followed by a detailed briefing from your guide covering pacing, safety, and expectations for the night climb. You will then rest for a few hours before being awakened around midnight for your summit attempt.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~4–5 km (2.5–3 miles)
Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: ~500 m
Overnight: Barafu Camp (~4,600 m / 15,092 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight under the stars.
You climb slowly and steadily through steep scree and rocky slopes, guided at a controlled “pole pole” pace. The climb is physically demanding due to altitude and cold temperatures, but your guides provide continuous support and encouragement. After several hours, you reach Stella Point at sunrise, where the sky lights up over glaciers and the African plains. From here, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m) — the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is an emotional and unforgettable achievement. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The descent brings relief as oxygen levels increase and vegetation gradually returns.
- Trek Details:
Distance: ~25 km (15.5 miles)
Time: 12–15 hours
Elevation Gain: ~1,296 m
Elevation Loss: ~2,800 m
Overnight: Mweka Camp (~3,100 m / 10,170 ft)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the lush rainforest. The trail is gentle and refreshing, with vibrant greenery, bird sounds, and fresh oxygen-rich air. This final walk offers time to reflect on your journey—from the rainforest to the summit and back. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you complete park formalities and receive your official summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to Arusha for a hot shower, relaxation, and celebration of your achievement.
