Day By Day Itinerary
Your journey begins at Marangu Gate, where registration and park formalities are completed. After meeting your mountain crew, you start trekking through dense tropical rainforest.
This section is rich in biodiversity—you may encounter blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The trail is wide, well-maintained, and gradually ascends, allowing your body to begin acclimatizing gently.
Humidity is high here, and rain is possible, so proper rain gear is essential.
By afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Hut, a cluster of wooden A-frame huts nestled within the forest. After settling in, you may take an optional short walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views of northern Tanzania and Kenya.
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: +850m
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meal plan: FB
Leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape opens into moorland with giant heathers and unique plants like lobelias and groundsels.
This is a significant acclimatization day, with a noticeable altitude gain. The air becomes cooler and thinner, and the terrain more expansive. On clear days, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak in the distance.
The hike is steady but longer, requiring good pacing and hydration. Your guide will encourage a “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) approach to support altitude adaptation.
Horombo Hut is larger and often busier, serving as a key rest point for both ascending and descending climbers.
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation Gain: +1,000m
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meal plan: FB
Today you transition into the alpine desert zone—a stark, dramatic environment with little vegetation and wide-open views.
The trail is long but gradual, crossing a saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This section can feel mentally challenging due to its monotony and increasing altitude.
You will arrive at Kibo Hut by early afternoon. After lunch, you will rest and prepare for your summit attempt. Your guide will conduct a detailed briefing covering safety, pacing, and what to expect during the night ascent.
An early dinner is served, and you will sleep for a few hours before waking around midnight.
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Elevation Gain: +980m
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meal plan: FB
This is the most demanding and rewarding day of the trek.
Your summit attempt begins around midnight. Equipped with headlamps, you will ascend slowly through steep switchbacks and loose volcanic scree. The climb to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) is the toughest section, both physically and mentally.
From Gilman’s Point, the trail becomes less steep as you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.
Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment—standing above the clouds on the Roof of Africa.
After a short celebration and photos, you begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.
This long day requires endurance, mental strength, and proper pacing.
Distance: 22 km (6 km ascent + 16 km descent)
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Elevation Gain: +1,195m / -2,175m
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meal plan: FB
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through moorland and back into the rainforest zone.
The descent is long but faster, with warmer temperatures as you lose altitude. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you will sign out and receive your summit certificate.
Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Elevation Loss: -1,850m
Meal plan: HB
